The publicity shot was for a new clothing line which claims to help empower young girls, launched in collaboration with Ellen DeGeneres. Clothing retailer GAP has been forced to pull an advert for a line of children's clothing after it was accused of being 'passively racist'. It shows a white girl from a youth performance group resting her arm on the head of a shorter black 8-year-old, who is her fellow performer and adopted sister. The advert has provoked stinging criticism on Twitter from people who claim it suggests only white girls can be empowered and black girls are subordinate.
This GapKids ad, posted to Twitter on Saturday, ignited claims of passive racism from some viewers, who objected to what they characterized as a black girl being used as an armrest by a white girl. This particular tweet storm was notable also for the backlash to the blacklash, with lots of other observers saying the racism claim was a wild overreaction. On the other: Women tend to not only not talk about their accomplishments, but, in fact, to minimize them. Ladies, we need to start seeing self-promotion as an altruistic act. Speak up at networking events and social gatherings. Contact a local Girl Scout troop and offer to come talk about your job, or simply have a one-on-one conversation about your work with a younger woman or girl you know.
